BP is the fallguy. Halliburton did this, and our leaders ALL have stock in Hallinurton. Our government is profiting from this spill.

See prisonplanet.com for more info.

I think you’re over-reaching this. Conspiracies are cool and they make sweet drama, but are rarely practical. I agree with both of you. That one chain of events controlled by BP/Halliburton which finally ended as a giant mess of crude oil and seawater was, of course, the fault of those corporations. But let's not be narrow-minded. If we do consider the world's thirst for oil we have a rather peculiar situation where corporations, seeing the demand for a product they can sell successfully to make a profit, take greater risks to obtain it - in this case the oil.
As you can see, there is a greater picture to consider whenever something happens that opens the eyes of the public to the world of global economy and environmental neglect. So let's not just look at the incident itself, but rather at the deeper cause of the situation we're in.
Enough said. Now go f*cking think about this, people. And sell you f*cking cars :) Cheers!

mhmm

Do you follow http://www.azspot.tumblr.com ? They publish political articles and they've done some great ones about the oil spill. I'd like to just make three quick points:

1. I completely agree with you that people blaming Obama for this disaster is ludicrous. The same people who decry big government and want government out of their lives and are champions of private companies are the same ones now holding Obama accountable for not cleaning up the oil spill, which was caused by a private business, faster. Like you have said many times, the responsibility for cleaning up the oil spill is on BP, not the government. The point is that the people blaming the government are at odds with their own ideology.

2. I understand why people want to boycott BP. This makes sense. I only want to bring up a point that I recently saw on the news which is that boycotting BP does not hurt the company, it really hurts the small convenience stores that sell BP's product. I worry that by trying to punish this huge and negligent corporation we might be hurting some small business owners too but everyone has to decide for themselves if they feel comfortable filling their tank with BP's gasoline.

3. I want to mention something that I'm not sure has been addressed yet which is the long-term health effects on people who are currently cleaning up the oil spill. Azspot posted this chilling article: http://azspot.net/post/708335639/read-this-before-you-volunteer-to-clean-up-the-bp-oil. It's about a woman who participated in the clean-up of the Exxon Valdez oil spill some years ago. She still has health problems and knows many others who do too and who have even died. The environmental consequences are well-documented but I think the toll on human life might be the second tragedy of the oil spill.

Thanks for starting this tumblr and thanks for keeping the discourse intelligent and factual.

I like you.

The job of F*ck BP is not done until all reparations are paid and all cleanup is complete. Keep the questions flowing

ProPublica Photographer: I Was Followed by BP Security and Then Detained by Police

ProPublica Photographer: I Was Followed by BP Security and Then Detained by Police:
marco:

To summarize:

A photographer took these photos of a BP oil refinery while standing on the grass median of a public road. (With very few exceptions, it’s perfectly legal to take pictures of anything visible from a public place, even if the subject is privately owned.)

BP’s security noticed, called the city police, and followed him by car to a gas station.

The police forcefully detained, harassed, and threatened him for more than 20 minutes for something that is not a crime and that they did not witness.

The police disclosed all of his personal information, including his Social Security number, to a BP security guard.

The police effectively forced him to reveal the photos he had taken and continued to detain, harass, and threaten him even after an officer had evaluated them and decided that they were not a threat to Homeland “Security”.

He was further detained, harassed, and threatened by a Homeland Security agent who arrived at the scene and forced him to reveal the publication he was working for.

There’s a good chance that a crime was committed there, but not by the photographer.

Is there any doubt who’s running our country?

This is Your Fault

original

This is everyone’s fault. Regardless of if you had a role in the oil spill. There should not be one sole blame on someone, like the BP executives. It is our mentality towards oil, and short term views of the world that is the problem. Does everyone seriously think that this oil massacre is going to solve anything? If anything it is only going to open the public’s eye for a mere second about how we view the world. Humanity has a tendency to throw money at our problems then forget about it. “Out of site. Out of mind”. It is what happened with the flooding in the Philippines, the Haitian earthquake, Hurricane Katrina relief aid, the tsunami of 2004 in thailand. We have a tendency to donate money, throw a relief concert featuring up and coming pop icons so it can be “relevant”, feel good about ourselves for doing a “good deed”, then forget about it. Then we go through our lives ignorantly blissful to the problems that still go on in those places. The gulf will never be the same, but do you think anyone will care come October? No. There will be some other disaster for us to be good samaritans, or lack there of. Open your eye’s people. This problem is our problem. It stems from our thirst for oil and if we don’t wake up we’re all screwed… Correction. Even if we somehow wake up tomorrow and the entire world changes their lives to help make the earth sustainable we would still all be screwed. We have almost passed the point of no return for our climate. Wake up and do something. Care about the relief for places like this for longer than the news reports it. Do something, anything, to help ween our country off of oil and carbon based energy. It pisses me off when people try to transfer the blame on a single source, away from themselves. There is no single source, it is everyone’s fault. However, the world is too ignorant to admit that.

-Mike

It is our fault for using the only viable source of energy available to us, as determined by the free market?

F*ck that. It is BP’s fault. Their MAIN JOB is drilling for oil, and they had NO PLAN for the ONE WAY in which their ONE FOCUS could go horribly wrong. F*ck them. It is not everyone’s fault just because we’re not out protesting every day to make all energy renewable. It doesn’t work like that. Your points of view are horribly, horribly naïve.

How is it the population’s fault that ONE corporation made a G*DDAMN MASSIVE f*ck-up?

thedailywhat:

Early Bird Special: It’s Friday! So pack a lunch and grab the kids (and a bottle of Goo Gone) and head on down to Florida’s majestic Destin Beach — where the water is fine, and the oil is even finer.

[reddit.]

See, this is a good example of where the government may actually be to blame for something. We can’t in good conscience blame them for not taking control of businesses (unless you prefer complete socialism, and I don’t think most people complaining about government not getting involved do). But we can blame them for not f*cking closing beaches with oil washed up and kids playing in the oil.

So f*ck the local governments too for not closing this beach, but more importantly - f*ck BP.

The Gulf Spill // Two Months Later

The Gulf Spill // Two Months Later

'BP Sucks' gallery

'BP Sucks' gallery:

Post on topic, lose followers

I don’t get this.

Well it at least may make their stock drop.
P.S. Love your blog. (:

I’ll answer your question with an anecdote. It took George H. W. Bush about two weeks to federalize the clean up of the Exxon Valdez spill and he was lauded for taking too long to do it. Especially in the case of BP’s gross incompetence, the military would be far better prepared to allocate and disperse aid and I think the company who made the spill should not be the one in charge of stopping the leak if they don’t do it within days. The government should collect scientists, solve the leak and hand the responsible party a bill.

Which would you rather: lock the BP up in a small, concrete room and take nail clippers to them until they're dead, or have them tied up and drowned in their own, putrid, once beautiful water?

I’d rather them all file personal bankruptcy without a pound sterling to their names.

Do you think BP should be able to pay out dividends? Pensions are what put GM in such financial trouble and it’s mostly thanks to overzealous union bosses. Unions are good, but unions as a monopoly are doing the opposite of their goal. Plus, a pension ioften discourages added savings for retirement.

That being said, I think pensions are more deserved than dividends in the midst of this crisis.
